Several patches for AIX, notably the CPU patched for Oracle Infrastructure fail to correctly detect platform id on AIX 5L systems.

When applying OPatch, the following error is displayed:

This patch is not suitable for this operating system.
Please contact support for the correct patch.

ERROR: OPatch failed during pre-reqs check.

Solution is to run $export OPATCH_PLATFORM_ID=212

prior to running OPatch
